Laser Thomson Scattering Measurements of Electron Temperature and Density in the Near-Field Plume of a Hall-Effect Thruster

چکیده
Non-invasive measurements of electron temperature and density in the near-field plume of a Hall-effect thruster were performed using a laser Thomson scattering diagnostic. Laser measurements were processed using a maximum likelihood estimation method and results were compared to electrostatic double probe measurements. Electron temperature ranged from approximately 1 – 40 eV and density ranged from 1.0 × 10 m−3 to 1.3 × 10 m−3 over discharge voltages from 250 to 450 V and mass flow rates of 40 to 80 SCCM.

Plasma properties downstream of a low-power Hall thruster
Triple Langmuir probes and emissive probes were used to measure the electron number density, electron temperature, and plasma potential downstream of a low-power Hall thruster. The results show a polytropic relation between electron temperature and electron number density throughout the sampled region. Over a large fraction of the plume, the plasma potential obeys the predictions of ambipolar e...
متن کاملApplication of maximum likelihood methods to laser Thomson scattering measurements of low density plasmas.
Laser Thomson scattering (LTS) is an established plasma diagnostic technique that has seen recent application to low density plasmas. It is difficult to perform LTS measurements when the scattered signal is weak as a result of low electron number density, poor optical access to the plasma, or both. Photon counting methods are often implemented in order to perform measurements in these low signa...

Vacuum ultraviolet emission (137.9 nm) of boron neutrals sputtered from a 200 W xenon Hall thruster boron nitride insulator is evaluated as a diagnostic for real time evaluation of thruster insulator erosion. Three Hall thruster plasma control variables are examined; ion energy (discharge potential), ion flux (propellant flow), and plasma conductivity (magnetic field strength). The boron emissi...

Breathing mode oscillations of a xenon 600 W Hall effect thruster have been studied using temporally resolved experimental data and numerical modeling. Fluctuations in xenon neutral near infrared (810–835 nm) emission in the near field thruster plume have been measured at 1-μs resolution using a high speed, phase-matched intensified charge coupled device. Oscillations in electron temperature, 3...

A time-synchronized continuous wave laser induced fluorescence diagnostic technique based on a sample hold scheme is applied to xenon ion velocimetry of a BHT-600 Hall thruster plume. This method is capable of correlating measured fluorescence excitation lineshapes with current fluctuations in a plasma discharge and is tolerant of natural drifting in the current oscillation frequency. This pape...
